Snow White is a virgin, pure and in touch with nature – as seen by her ability to talk to animals. The step-mother queen is a crone, outdated and old, and must be replaced by the fresh, young princess Snow White. The first scene of Snow White shows her at a well, in a way she has just come out of the womb. Her consort is waiting for her. They meet during spring, the season of fertility and birth. Snow White is cast away into a dark forest – re-entering the womb in a way. She is killed with an apple – similar to Eve in the garden of Eden. She is brought back to life in the spring with a kiss – pretty obviously a fertility ritual.
