Norse Runes

The runes were intended not only as a writing system but also as a form of magic. Priests would bless births and deaths with them to help with passage (if you were wealthy that is). They also often christened ships to bring luck on the journey.

Here’s my cheat sheet of the runes – sorry for the poor quality.

It’s really neat to find out the meaning of your name using the runes. Give it a sht and let me know your thoughts?

If you get stuck, I can help. The alphabet can be somewhat complex because the character and meaning for a sound often depend on where they are in the word and the gender of the person described. The “a” character changes meaning if it’s in a female name to “earth” and “ancestry” if it’s in a male’s name.
